Coming to DVD–Tuesday

American Reunion

In the comedy ‘American Reunion’, all the ‘American Pie’ characters we met a little more than a decade ago return to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship.

It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle married while Kevin and Vicky said goodbye. Oz and Heather grew apart, but Finch still longs for Stifler’s mom. Now these lifelong friends have come home as adults to reminisce about–and get inspired by–the hormonal teens who launched a comedy legend.

 Fightville

One can argue that boxing is athletic competition reduced to its finest essence as two fighters use their fists to determine who the strongest athlete is. The growing phenomenon of the sport of mixed-martial arts (MMA) takes this notion, adds the showmanship of professional wrestling, and encourages would-be contestants by declaring that anyone with the strength and the nerve can step into the cage, regardless of their training and chosen style (or their lack thereof). While the sport of MMA has spawned multi-million-dollar businesses like the Ultimate Fighting Championship franchise, filmmakers Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein offer a look at the lower levels of the game as two aspiring fighters from Louisiana struggle to make a name for themselves in this documentary. In Fightville, we meet Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier, who came from an abusive upbringing, first injured someone in a fight at the age of five, and has the anger and determination to take (and dole out) punishment in the ring on a regular basis. We’re also introduced to Albert Stainback, a smart and talented fighter with a good eye towards conjuring an image but not the same athletic skillset, and Gil “The Thrill” Guillory, an MMA promoter with an eye for talent and no use for starry-eyed would-be fighters who can’t give the crowd what they want and bring in return customers. Fightville received its world premiere at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival.

Being Flynn

Academy Award-nominated writer-director Paul Weitz (‘About a Boy’) turns his hand to this moving portrait of fathers and sons.

Based on a true story, ‘Being Flynn’ follows Nick Flynn (Paul Dano of ‘Little Miss Sunshine,’ ‘There Will Be Blood’) who is shocked to have his eccentric and long-absent father, Jonathan (two-time Academy Award winner Robert De Niro) reach out to him unexpectedly. Still feeling the loss of his mother (played in flashbacks by four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore) in the midst of starting a new relationship with Denise (‘Juno”s Olivia Thirlby), the last person Nick wants to see is his father. But you can’t outrun fate and slowly Nick comes to realize he has been given the chance to make a real future not only for himself, but for his struggling father too.

Freak Dance

‘Freak Dance’ is a dance musical parody in the vein of Electric Boogaloo, Step Up, Dirty Dancing, You Got Served and every other dance movie ever made. The sexy and wealthy Cocolonia must escape her roots and learn to street dance with the help of Funky Bunch, who dreams of being the best dancer ever. They must save the Fantaseez community center from the Building Department and the evil gang banger dancers before it’s too late. Will the duo be able to save their home? Only love can save them now.

On the Ice

Shot entirely on location in Barrow, Alaska, On The Ice is the engrossing and suspenseful feature film debut by filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean about two teenage boys who have grown up like brothers go about their lives in the comfortable claustrophobia of an isolated Alaskan town. Early one morning, on a seal hunt with another teenager, an argument between the three boys quickly escalates into a tragic accident. Bonded by their dark secret, the two best friends are forced to create one fabrication after another in order to survive. The shocked boys stumble through guilt-fueled days, avoiding the suspicions of their community as they weave a web of deceit. With their future in the balance, the two boys are forced to explore the limits of friendship and honor.

Quill: The Life of a Guide Dog

The documentary-like story of a yellow Labrador Retriever guide dog for the blind named Quill. We follow Quill from the litter, his selection to become a guide, his life with a foster family until his first birthday, followed by highly specialized schooling in guiding the sightless. He is then paired with a blind man named Watanabe Mitsuru who is at first reluctant to rely on Quill. But Quill’s great patience, gentleness and skill eventually wins him over and they become inseparable friends.

The Flowers of War

Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou (‘Raise the Red Lantern,’ ‘Ju Dou,’ ‘Hero,’ ‘House of the Flying Daggers’) tells an epic story of love and sacrifice in /The Flowers of War,’ starring Christian Bale and introducing Ni Ni.

The film, set during the Japanese invasion of China, is told from a young girl’s point of view, not as a history lesson, but as an intimate, elemental and paradoxically universal celebration of the human spirit. Bale stars as a dissolute Westerner who seeks refuge in a Catholic Church. There he meets a beautiful Chinese courtesan who helps him rescue a group of schoolgirls from a terrible fate at the hands of the Japanese.

The film represents one of China’s most ambitious productions, involving the recreation of 1937 Nanking built from scratch over a one-year period and the collaboration of one of Hollywood’s most sought after leading men (Christian Bale).
