Wow…did anyone actually see this bit of news coming? Despite being a bit of a Rage fan myself, I was actually caught completely unaware when I saw that this was released on the Xbox Live marketplace. Who’d have thought it though? A semi-successful game, actually viewed by many as a failure, releasing a nice chunk of DLC way after it first emerged. It doesn’t exactly scream out ‘Great marketing move, guys!’, now does it? You can probably bet that many previous Rage owners have already traded in their copy of the game, but hopefully (for id Software’s sake) they have allowed it to gather dust and may even consider topping up their playing time with a return to the Wasteland? I bloody well hope so…
The DLC itself seems rather simple. You have to fight against a bunch of rough chaps who have been causing a ruckus around the Wasteland. These folks call themselves ‘The Scorchers’, hence the name of the DLC! The missions take you through areas that you visit during the main story of Rage so it’s probably better to attempt if you’ve played a large chunk of the game. It seems like they have re-hashed quite a bit of the old in-game locations, so only expect a bit of variety within familiar surroundings.
If you’ve already got Rage on Xbox 360, this DLC is only 400 Microsoft points so definitely consider giving it a try. If you haven’t got Rage then you can fetch it for pretty cheap. It’s like a weird, first-person shooter version of Fallout but with less atmosphere, grit and simply not as immersive. It is a good game, just not the best.
