Guns of Icarus Online is a multiplayer first person shooter developed by Muse Games. The game has a steampunk theme and you play as a player on a zeppelin,= fighting against other players in a Team Deathmatch setting. Guns of Icarus Online is a PC exclusive that came out on the 29th of October, 2012 and it costs around £15 on Steam.

Muse Games originally put the game up on Kickstarter back in December 23rd in 2011. They wanted $10,000 for the game to be funded and they actually got $35,237. Since then it has seen a beta release and eventually got released on Steam.

First off, the game looks very nice, but when you first start the game and go on quick join, you are not given a lot of instruction on what to do. With no instructions, I found myself running around on the zeppelin trying to find out what I should be doing. It didn’t take long to find out that I have to destroy the red zeppelins while repairing ours.

You’re teamed up with other players on the zeppelin and one person is in charge of controlling the aircraft, while the other players can go on the weapon rigs to shoot the other airships or use their trusty hammer to fix their zeppelin. THis can be done by bashing on pipes, engines, guns or anything that has the fix icon above it.

Because I was playing on my own I didn’t really get the sense of teamwork. It just felt like if there is a gun free you go for it and start shooting and you don’t take notice of what needs fixing, or at least I didn’t.

I feel this is the kind of game that would be great when you’re playing with a zeppelin full of your friends, but I think it’s lacking in that solo experience.  It might be better if the players are given a set role or you can choose one right off the start, designating someone as shooter while someone else serves as the ship’s engineer. This would mean the person who is the best at flying would get control of the zeppelin whereas the best shooter can be firing the ship’s cannons where they are comfortable.

Overall I give Guns of Icarus Online a 3.5/5 based on playing on my own. However, I feel that this game could easily get a higher rating if you played with a group of your friends.

This review doesn’t accurately cover the game.

Players can choose between three classes (Pilot, gunner, and engineer) at the beginning of every game. They can also customize those classes to their liking with different tools, available ammunition types, piloting maneuvers, and costumes. Furthermore there is no “solo experience” to be heard of. As the name, “Guns Of Icarus: Online,” suggests this game is 99% online multiplayer with the exception of a training mode where new players should go to learn the game. The game is completely teamwork based and has a great community. The fact of the matter is, you aren’t going to find your self in the position of, “if there is a gun free you go for it and start shooting and you don’t take notice of what needs fixing,” unless you completely ignore the requests of the rest of your team and what needs to get done on the ship. If that’s the case you probably shouldn’t be playing in the first place.
