Many fitness enthusiasts have a very difficult time taking off a day from the gym when they are sick. I have often been guilty of this offense in the past, and although I would feel like I was doing good for my body by getting the workout in, I was actually putting myself at risk of allowing the cold / virus get worse.
When you exercise, your body tissues break down requiring a healing process to build them back up. The problem that occurs when you exercise when you feel a cold coming on is that your body begins to heal the broken down muscle from your workout and is not able to send a 100% effort to the immune system to effectively fight the oncoming cold. What you will often see is when you wake up in the morning is that you are feeling worse than you did the day before as the cold won the battle and has infected your body.
What’s the moral of this story? The old saying sweat out the fever is actually one which will do you more harm than good. When you feel sick, take a rest day, head to bed early and stock your body up on vitamins and healthy fruits and veggies. After your body has fought off the invading cold, hit the gym hard and catch yourself back up.
