Batman: Gotham City Impostors, developed by WB Games / Monolith is the latest downloadable first person shooter that has made its way onto my 360 hard drive, securing itself a spot on my regular playlist. I am sure that you want to know more about why.
The story behind the game is a simple, yet goofy one. For reasons unknown, the real Batman and Joker have decided to vacation together away from Gotham City, leaving it vulnerable to all of the evil which lurks within. Knowing of the departure of their heroes, citizens of the city, all having a screw or two loose in their heads, decide to take over the role of their mentors, either protecting or terrorizing Gotham City.
This title is strictly a multiplayer experience offering no campaign and not much of a story. Upon entering the game, you have the option to complete a pretty fast tutorial teaching you the how to before you jump into the multiplayer battles. In this tutorial you will learn how to aim, shoot and move your character around the game. The controls are almost identical to the very well known Call of Duty control scheme. This tutorial was most useful when learning how to use the different special toys which are unique to this game. Gadgets such as the grapple gun, roller skates, glider rig, spring boots and targeting goggles are some which take a small amount of getting used to before you plunge yourself into an online battle.
You have completed the tutorial and you are ready to protect, or invade the city. You will have a few game types to choose from before doing so. Your choices are Team Deathmatch which needs no explanation, Fumigation, a game of capturing and holding positions much like Domination in COD and Psych Warfare which is much like capture the flag. All of the game types are fairly solid but I and the majority of others mostly choose to play Team Deathmatch.
As you play the game you will have the ability to rank up your player to a maximum level of 1000. Along the way you will unlock keys for weapons, perks, abilities and other goodies. After each online round you will also accumulate money which can be spent in the store on costumes and other gear. Customization of your characters looks as well as weapon loadout is a huge strength of this game. You can change everything about your character, from the size of their body (bigger equals slower but stronger) to their face, voice and makeup choices. Unlocking custom weapon slots are very convenient when trying to put together classes which work well in specific situations. Choose from an arsenal of weapons including assault rifles, sub machine guns, heavy weapons, sniper rifles, shotguns, launchers, blades and miscellaneous weapons. All of these weapons have unlockable attachments which will help the weapon perform in a way which suits your play style. Add a custom camo to your weapon and you are ready to tear up the streets.
In addition to your weapons you can also customize your player perks and abilities. Unlock Fun Facts, Rampage and Psych Profile, all which enhance player abilities and give you performance perks. Each of these will give you a bonus after either reaching a certain score or a certain number of deaths. Choose which you use wisely to both benefit your play style as well as your team.
The visual style of this game definitely has a fun flare to it, offering characters which will make you laugh along the way as well as colorful, attractive atmospheres. Sound during the game fits its purpose well. Having the ability to customize both the style and sound of your characters voice gives the game a custom, goofy sound. All in all, the game looks great and sounds good.
Impostors offers a very long shelf life with a difficult to attain 1000 max character level. After reaching that point, which will take a heck of a long time, you will be a pretty tough competitor in Gotham City which I am sure will make the game enjoyable as you tear up the competition.
This game is close to flawless with only one issue that I have come across. Every so often the game will freeze up and boot you to the console dashboard. This has happened to me three times total in approximately 10 hours of gameplay. I assume that this has been happening due to the sudden large popularity of the title.
With a $15 price tag, Batman: Gotham City Impostors is a must have on your console or PC. It has taken the place of games in my collection such as Modern Warfare 3 and Gears of War 3. This says a lot being that Impostors is an inexpensive, multiplayer Downloadable title.
Looking at the individuality of the title, customization options, ease of control and the overall fun factor, my professional opinion gives Batman: Gotham City Impostors a score of…
5 out of 5
