Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – New Details & Screenshots

It’s Monday, that means embargoes have been lifted and many sites have more juicy details about Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Recapping from our previous reveal trailer post, it was confirmed that Edward Kenway will be the main protagonist of this installment. Edward is father to the deceased Haytham Kenway and grandfather to the naive Connor. He is described as a charismatic, selfish and cocky pirate. The game takes place at the dawn of the 18th century, exploring the West Indies during the Golden Age of Piracy. Pirates are a major theme for this game as our Assassin is one. According to GameInformer, Edward Kenway used to be a privateer until the monarchs of England, France and Spain signed treaties by the year 1713 that resulted in him, a struggling privateer becoming a pirate that raids and loots ships.

Since the Assassin will be exploring the West Indies, there are a few notable places Edward can explore. Following the large cities formula of previous Assassin’s Creed titles players will be able to explore Havana, Nassau and Kingston. Among historical characters, Edward “Blackbeard” teach will join the cast, as well as Charles Vane, Calico Jack, Benjamín Hornigold and Anne Bonny. Expanding the explorable areas, players will also have the opportunity to navigate the open seas aboard the Jackdaw. The Jackdaw is considered to serve as a secondary character where Edward will be able to upgrade and customize it. The captain will need his crew to be able to navigate and help him loot other ships he encounters. Besides the explorable big cities, players can discover hidden coves, fishing villages, jungles, Mayan ruins, plantations within the neighbor islands. This is a big design element and perhaps the selling point of Assassin’s Creed 4:Black Flag. Ubisoft has said that they don’t want to constrain players with invisible barriers while exploring the open seas. This means that if Edward spots a nice little beach, he can set dock or jump and swim to the shore. Swimming has been an unexplored feature of the Assassin’s Creed series, but it’s about to change.

Edward will be the first Assassin to be able to swim deep underwater. As a pirate in search of treasure, he will need to explore the underwater environments to loot treasure from sunken ships. According to CVG, swimming underwater will be possible with a diving bell. Swimming underwater will not be as calm as one could think, this is because players will have to watch for underwater predators like sharks. Also, there is a harpoon mechanic yet to be shown.

Being able to explore the ocean with the Jackdaw should be fun, but what if players want to go up against enemy ships? following the ground enemy archetypes formula, Ubisoft will be introducing ship archetypes. As an example: the Charger ship prefers to ram enemy ships at full speed. The economy system will revolve around Edward’s and the Jackdaw’s enhancements. Upgrading the Jackdaw will make it faster and even powerful go up against enemy ships that weren’t possible. So how can players know if a ship or an undiscovered island have loot? According to IGN, Edward will use a spyglass to scout around and the game will provide information to players on what can be discovered or looted. Regarding Edward’s upgrades, at first he will start with one pistol and players will have to upgrade his arsenal for him to be able to carry four pistols.
