Over the passed few years, there have been many games that attempted to get a wedge into the slightly monopolized genre of MMOs. Sadly, most of these titles usually didn’t have a large enough fan-base or income to support the servers and development; Leading to some rather impressive games to be inevitably forgotten. However, more and more games keep being, most of which are quite impressive. These are just a few of those games:
Archeage is a open world sandbox MMO being developed by XL Games. The game will allow you to do just about anything you want. You could serve a Kingdom as a knight or wizard, or take your skills to road as a traveler. If however, you want a bit more authority, you could build a mighty kingdom and rule it with iron fist. Sending your knights and wizards to do your bidding. Be it conquering neighboring kingdoms or defending your own from invaders.
The game was released in Korea a few months ago and is suspected to release in North America around the end of the year or the beginning of the next.
The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls Online is being developed by ZeniMax Online Studios, and will be the first in the series to be massively multiplayer. The game takes place throughout the continent of Tamriel, with a few exceptions for Expansion content, and will be set 1000 years prior to the events Skyrim. The game will feature three playable factions consisting of different races. These factions are: The Aldmeri dominion, The Daggerfall Covenant, and the Ebonheart Pact. You must choose your side as the three factions attempt to conquer the Imperial City and form a new empire.
The game will most likely release either the middle or end of the year.
Neverwinter is the long awaited sequel to the Neverwinter Night series and is being developed by Cryptic Studios. The game takes place in the Forgotten Realms, a campaign setting for the popular game Dungeons and Dragons and utilizes a similar rule system. Neverwinter will feature classic DND classes, each with their own unique abilities and skills, and will have a strong story line which will be similar to Dragon Age or Oblivion.
There isn’t a official release date. However, It a it may release near the end of the year.
Monster Hunter Online
The next game in the popular Monster Hunter series, Capcom has teamed up with Crytek to create this PC game using the CryEngine 3 to greatly improve the games appearance. Currently not much is known about the game other than what has been seen in trailers that Crytek has released. However the game will include new features such as destructive terrain that will alter gameplay, and finishing moves for severing limbs.
Since it was recently announced, it may be a while before this game sees the light of day.
This was only the surface of games that are coming to this popular genre. There are many other games being created that deserve recognition and you should definitely watch for them.
