There are a few select game franchises that have taken a key role in the world of Gaming. These stunning IP’s have delivered game after game of excitement, joy, and straight up awesomeness. The characters of these games have become such a large part of our lives, that many of our childhoods can be summed up with their first name. For whatever reasons these old character are given new life through each installment and continue to produce a charming gaming experience every time. However, as much as I hate to be the one to say it, there are few franchises that are not one of the lucky few IP’s that will never die. Often these franchises have a couple great games, but are continuously published to simply make money off an IP that died years ago.
Let me be clear, by no means do I hate these franchises. In fact, I loved them all at one point. But i can’t help but say it how it is, so without further delay here are 3 game franchises that should call it quits.
Honestly, it pains me to put this franchise on this list, but my logical side has persuaded me that it’s the right decision. I have always loved the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and I have been playing it since Altair was the only killer Assassin on the block, and this game series does do a lot of things right, story, gameplay, etc. However, I have noticed that as the series continues the game seems to become more bland. The fighting is more or less the same, and the mechanics aren’t different. To combat this, Ubisoft gave us more ways to kill people, but I feel it just made the game easier. I remember in the first game when a large group of guards were alerted, you ran. In the newer games you become a killing machine very early and large groups, no matter the size, are easily slaughtered. Going on their 4th game, not including the Assassin’s Creed 2 based games, I am fairly certain that the game will be more or less the same as the other. The surprising end of ACIII leaves me wondering how they will make the story in AC4 enticing for their fans. Lastly, I am worried that too much of Ubisoft is going into the Assassin’s Creed games right now, when they have so many fresh ideas that those developers could be working on instead. In the end, I have little faith in the series anymore and unless a major breath of fresh air is bestowed on AC4 then the series should be concluded
Call of Duty
Don’t act surprised, appalled, or furious that CoD made it on this list. In fact, I’m sure you could have guessed that it would be mentioned because, frankly, people have been saying the franchise should end for years. In fact, some of my co-workers on GNT love CoD more that anything. Yet I have to enlighten those who are oblivious to the scam that I believe has become Call of Duty. The game has been exactly the same for years. Every gun, every step, every time you get a kill, it all feels exactly the same as the previous games. Now I am willing to give credit where credit is due, I love CoD World at War and the first Modern Warfare but after that they all blur into one game. I can’t honestly tell you the difference between the other installments, and many would agree. I haven’t been paying a lot of attention to the new installment coming later this year, but from what i have heard, dogs and fish, I’m not impressed. Of course I will still get nasty messages claiming this franchise is better than sliced bread. However, the rest of us will still be looking for something new and exciting in the game series and I’m not sure we will find it. I still think CoD will continue to sell and even be given high ratings, but this time my money wont be going to Activision and I don’t think your money should either.
Please, please, please, please, PLEASE DON’T MAKE ANOTHER FABLE Peter Molyneux! All kidding aside, I hate Fable. The first was an amazing experience, the second was alright, but the third just made me want to cry. I think we can all agree that this madness needs to end. Although there are no plans to make another, plans change no matter how much we want them to stay in their cold graves. Peter Molyneux has actually left Microsoft at this point and has started a new project, Godus, with his own personal studio. Unfortunately, every time i hear his name, I can’t help but cringe as a result of the scares Fable left on me. I think the worst part of all was the false claims. The amazing ideas we couldn’t wait to see come to life on our screens. However, those turned out to be lies and Fable 3 was a disappointment. The game is literally free in XBLA right now and i still refuse to touch it. All in all ,the first couple of Fable games were a good experience but the false promises, glitches, and strange mechanics should keep this franchise deep in its grave.
In conclusion, there are some games that have created a solid base in the ever-changing gaming world, and have continued to amaze their fans. Then there are pieces of rubbish that steal money off the fans of a franchise long dead. That’s not fair to put every franchise in that position because not all these games are in that situation. Some have simply lost their roots and with it their fans. Nonetheless, there are a few game franchises that should simply stop. Whether it be blandness, repetitiveness or false promises, some franchises simply need to quit for their own sake, and their crying fans’ sake.
